Biography Maps is an exercise in digital cartography and participatory mapping that reproduces abstract animated maps of public spaces using social media data. The series consists of a time lapse “map” of a city created by bots based on Instagram location tags (with characteristics determined by other account attributes) that move across the screen and interact with each other. As the autonomous bot programs progress, they leave lines of varying colors and textures depending on their age and how they interact with each other. The idea was to remake the outline of the city through human (and robot) activity rather than predetermined geographies.
Shown as a video installation at the San Francisco Arts Institute, as a series of prints with the San Francisco Women Artist’s Gallery.
